Light, darkness and the often
stark contrasts of reality framed
the life and work of Bill Brandt, who is
widely recognized as one of the most
significant photographers of the
20th century. His style ranged from surreal
to documentary and his images reflect
shifting – one might say obsessive–
creative and intellectual passions.
Ansel Adams considered him “an artist
of the highest order.”

Born in 1904, Brandt and his three
brothers spent their earliest years
in Hamburg, Germany and grew up
during World War I. At 16 he contracted
tuberculosis and spent years recuperating
in Switzerland. In the late 1920s Brandt
went to Vienna to seek further treatment,
and there his photographic career started.

One of his earliest assignments was to
shoot a portrait of the poet Ezra Pound.

This meeting with Pound led Brandt
to immerse himself in the heady Parisian
culture of the early 1930s, working briefly
with the avant-garde artist Man Ray.
He then settled in London, which provided
the inspiration for much of his major work.

Brandt’s pieces contain important social
commentary as well as poetic resonance.
His dark portrayals of pre-war London,
a harrowing World War II series and
scenes of industrial towns contrast with
softer, more lyrical landscape photos
of the English countryside. The work is
dynamic and intense; he often used
wide-angle lenses and distorted his images.

Renowned for his abstract studies of
nudes, Brandt also produced a
collection of portraits of some of the
most celebrated artists and writers of
the 20th Century, including Pablo Picasso,
Dylan Thomas, Rene Magritte, and
Francis Bacon. The personal life of the
man behind the lens, however,
was mysterious and enigmatic.

Brandt was honored internationally for
his accomplishments until his death
in 1983. Major collections of his prints
currently hang in London’s Victoria and
Albert Museum, New York’s MoMA and
Paris’ Bibliotheque Nationale.
